Unclaimed money helping local charities, foundations
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – On Thursday, 24-Hour News 8 and the Attorney Generals office teamed up to help Indiana residents find unclaimed money. It’s money you may have never known was there.
Turns out, there are a lot of names on the list you may recognize.
Jim Irsay, Andrew Luck, Reggie Wayne, for example.
Former Colts linebacker Gary Brackett also had unclaimed money under an old address.
“I’m excited; it’s a good day,” Brackett said.
Brackett said this is perfect timing to find this unclaimed money, as he’s re-launching his foundation with an April 16 event.
“It’s a great gift to my foundation, some new found money. It’s going to help out some kids. It’s money I didn’t know I had, so I’m going to be able to put it to good use,” he added.
He explained more about the foundation, saying it will “really engage more around employment, getting people ready to enter into the job force. So $100 will help us add more to our seminars to help people get ready to enter into the workforce.”
Also listed with some money on the website: non-profits like the Salvation Army, many churches across the state and YMCA’s across the state as well.
“$100 might not mean a lot to somebody else, but to us, it means four people can be sheltered safely for one month,” said Major Beth Petrie, Divisional Secretary for Salvation Army Indiana.
The Salvation Army says they check this database throughout the year, to make sure they’ve got all the cash on hand they should.
“It’s quite important this year, because we came a little bit shy of our goal, our Christmas goal. That goal is not just an arbitrary number, it’s based on our budget. Because of the fact we didn’t quite reach our goal during Christmas time, things are very tight right now, and we’re having to make some very important decisions. So locating a little bit of extra funding here or there in this manner has been very helpful,” said Petrie.
