Differences between Dem. candidates for state rep. District 26
TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – Education, infrastructure and jobs were some of the main points of discussion with the Democratic candidates for the state representative race for District 26.
The Tippecanoe County Democratic Party hosted the event Thursday evening. Candidates Deanna McMillan and Victoria Woeste spent about an hour answering questions from the audience. Along with the major topics, questions about RFRA and drug use also came up.
For much of the event, there was little separating the two candidates. But when 24 Hour News 8’s sister station, WLFI, asked afterwards what is the one issue they would like to tackle in the next legislative session, they had different responses.
“We have got to fix the schools. We have to figure out what the next method of accountability is going to be, and we need to stop this civil war between the state government and schools systems and teachers and parents,” said Woeste.
McMillan replied, “Economic development. We have a huge project that’s coming right straight through the middle of West Lafayette. Are we prepared? What do we do? And also, we can’t forget the other part of our district in Lafayette. Economic development. Jobs, jobs, jobs.”
Republican Randy Truitt announced his retirement in District 26 earlier this year. The winner between McMillan and Woeste will face the GOP primary winner, which pits Gerry Keen and Sally Siegrist against each other.
The Indiana primary is May 3.
