More than 1,000 protest abortion bill at Statehouse

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than a thousand people converged on the Indiana Statehouse on Saturday to protest a bill restricting abortions.

HB 1337 bans abortions conducted because of genetic abnormalities, race or gender.

It was signed by Gov. Mike Pence and will become law in July, but the ACLU filed a lawsuit this week on behalf of Planned Parenthood in hopes of blocking the bill.

“I’m a woman and I have the rights to my uterus,” protester Emma Fletcher said. “And my legislature is doing everything in its power to revoke my rights to decide really difficult decisions.”

A spokesperson for Pence says the governor believes the bill enhances protections for the unborn.

The new law also requires that fetal remains be buried or cremated. North Dakota is the only state with a similar law.
