Dog saved after falling through thin ice in Wisconsin

(WBAY) –  A dog named Diesel fell through thin ice at a dam on Townsend Flowage Wisconsin Saturday and his owner Thomas Strauch didn’t think his pup would make it out alive.

Thankfully, the Townsend Volunteer Fire Department was called in and helped save the dog. Diesel was treading water for about a half-hour when the firefighters stepped in.

“One firefighter jumped into the lake with phone in his pocket and all,” Strauch said. “The other firefighter got there and said he’s never heard a dog scream so loud that it sounded like person. They didn’t think he was going to make it, but luckily a guy saw and went out on his boat breaking through ice to get him.”

The Townsend Volunteer Fire Department posted a picture of Diesel shortly after his rescue, showing him blanketed with the coat of one of the firefighters.

The fall caused Diesel to get hypothermia, according to Strauch, but his dog is otherwise fine.

“My boy is definitely a fighter,” Strauch said. “As I sat in the back of the firetruck on my way to the station, all I could think about was all good times we had. I’m so glad my best friend made it.”

Strauch says he’s very thankful the firefighters were able to rescue his dog.
