Fort Wayne Wal-Mart worker killed when semi backs over him

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — An employee of the Maysville Road Wal-Mart was killed early Monday after he was run over by a semi trailer delivering goods to the superstore.

Emergency crews were called around 8 a.m. to the Wal-Mart store at 10420 Maysville Road where a body was found laying in the parking lot between a semi and a forklift. Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

According to Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Michael Joyner, the Wal-Mart employee was helping with the delivery of items for the outdoor living center. Joyner said the man was standing behind the World Way Freight Transport rig, helping the driver back up closer to the offloading area, when he was run over by the truck’s trailer.

It’s not clear why the man wound up in the semi trailer’s path. Joyner said police will study surveillance footage from the store to learn the course of events.

The Wal-Mart remained open for business, however a section of the parking lot where the incident took place was blocked off.

After noon, Wal-Mart issued a statement through its corporate communications and global responsibility senior manager, Aaron Mullins:

This is a very tragic situation and we are deeply saddened this morning by the loss of our friend and colleague. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. We are still learning all of the details and working with law enforcement to help provide any additional information.”
