IMPD park ranger arrested for OWI
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A park ranger with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was arrested Sunday for operating while intoxicated.
45-year-old Paul Berninger was off-duty and not driving a department vehicle at the time.
IMPD said officers responded to a call of a reckless driver near Rockville Road and Raceway Road on the west side Sunday after receiving several 911 calls. When the responding officer arrived, he found several people standing around a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the road.
The officer said the driver, Berninger, was attempting to fight the citizens that were standing around the car.
Berninger is a civilian employee of IMPD and his employment status will not be reviewed by a merit board. However, Chief Troy Riggs is recommending termination of Berninger’s employment to the director of city-county human resources.
