Brother dies saving his sister from stabbing death
Angola, Ind. (WANE) – An Angola family is grieving the loss of their son and calling him a hero. Police said Jonathan Abuja was stabbed to death when he got in between a fight between his sister and her fiance, a man who was trying to kill her.
People in Angola are hailing Jonathan Abuja a hero for saving his sister, Amber Abuja, from being stabbed to death by her fiance, Edwin Garcia.
“Jonathan was the best son that could’ve been to any mom,” said Mary Hixon, Jonathan and Amber’s mother. “He was kind and sweet. He was a gentle giant.”
Jonathan, Amber and Garcia all lived in the home. The fight between Amber and Garcia that morning escalated to the point that Garcia took a knife and stabbed Amber multiple times.
Amber, age 29, told police that when her brother jumped in to help her, 32-year-old Garcia stabbed him to death.
Neighbors said Garcia chased Amber out of the house and around the neighborhood. One woman said there was blood from the chase on the sidewalk in front of her home.
“I heard her screaming for help and immediately called 911,” said neighbor Traci Firestone. “I was one of 19 that called 911, thankfully. It’s senseless tragedy.”
Garcia lost track of Amber and was eventually found hiding in an abandoned house a couple of blocks away from their home.
The Abuja’s parents are reflecting on their son’s short life.
“It’s a terrible situation when everybody has to go through this,” said Michael Abuja, the father. “Nobody deserves to be stabbed to death.”
They’re thankful that they didn’t lose both children.
“His thought was always about his family and his friends and especially his little sister,” Hixon said. “He was a hero saving her life when this happened. If he wasn’t there, she’d be dead by now.”
Hixon said this situation is sad for both her and Garcia’s family.
“You don’t think something’s going to happen to your kid’s, going to be involved in murder charges or be murdered,” she said. “Both families are grieving for both of the kids right now.”
The Abuja family said Garcia stabbed Amber and killed Jonathan in this house early in the morning on April 9.
The family said Amber remains in a Fort Wayne hospital recovering from her injuries.
Garcia’s next court appearance is May 9.
