Neighborhood president petitioning for repaved streets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Amy Harwell juggled a cell phone in one hand, and loose sheets of paper in the other. Scribbled on the sheets were the names of streets in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood that are in need of attention.

Harwell created part of the list two years ago, after hearing complaints from residents in her neighborhood.

She took the list to various elected officials hoping to get the streets repaved, but she said her request went unanswered.

“I am paying taxes, and I can’t get my street fixed,” said Harwell in a June 2014 interview.

Harwell took 24-Hour News 8 on a tour. During our travels she pointed us to intersections she would like to see repaved. She also shared various obstacles some residents have shared like having to replace a tire after hitting a pot hole.

The list of requests will be sent to Mayor Joe Hogsett’s office. Harwell added the goal is not to point fingers at the mayor’s administration; however, she wanted to showcase the problems in her neighborhood.

“(They) just came in. They need to know what happened and what has gone on over the years,” Harwell said. “We need to give them a visual study.”

24-Hour News 8 took Harwell’s concerns to Mayor Hogsett’s Office and discovered that the Department of Public Works is currently putting together construction projects for 2016. There is no word if Martindale-Brightwood will be placed on that list.
