Butler ArtsFest 2016

Some say music is universal. When it comes to choral music, it’s much like a shared experience between people who might not normally coexist together. Listen as Tracy chats with Dr. John Perkins, Associate Director of Choral Activities at Butler University and Dr. Ysaÿe Barnwell, Choral and Social Activist, former member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, about this year’s Butler ArtsFest and the message they’re hoping to spread to the youth in Indy.

ABOUT: Dr. Ysaÿe Barnwell has been providing open sing situations for more than 30 years. Her approach is that everyone is welcome to sing – no audition. She says, “There’s power when you’re standing in front of adversity and you’re saying who you are and what you want through song. It’s not as likely they’re going to bust your head with a billy club if all you’re doing is singing. And if they do, they have to question why. Singing is not threatening the way weapons are.”
