Pothole patrol begins in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Central Indiana has been experiencing winter-like weather the past few weeks, but as the temperatures rise drivers may notice some bumps in the roads.

Potholes form because of freeze-thaw cycles. On Tuesday, 19 crews with the Department of Public Works worked overtime to focus on filling potholes. The crews started using a hot asphalt mix last month as asphalt plants have opened earlier this spring.

DPW said unlike cold mix which is used in winter months, hot mix is designed to give potholes a more permanent fix. Since March 21, DPW crews have used approximately 1,100 tons of hot mix.
