United States Attorney General visits IMPD

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch made a visit to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Her visit was part of a tour of local police departments. Lynch is visiting six police departments that she deems to have some of the best practices in the country. She picked IMPD because of its policy on officer safety and wellness.

Under IMPD’s safety and wellness plan, an officer can receive confidential help for health, substance abuse, marriage and finances.

“One of my top priorities as Attorney General is strengthening relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities we serve and protect,” said Attorney General Lynch. “During the second phase of my Community Policing Tour, I will be highlighting some of the innovative efforts underway around the country to build trust, foster cooperation and enhance public safety. I look forward to meeting with law enforcement officers, local leaders and residents in the weeks and months ahead to discuss how we can ensure that every American benefits from neighborhoods that are supportive, safe and strong.”

In 2015, Lynch picked several departments that are facing challenges. Part of her 2016 visits include:

  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • East Haven, Connecticut
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Richmond, California

Those departments are strong in the areas building trust, policy and oversight, technology/social media, community policing and safety and wellness.

Once she is finished collecting information from several departments, she will publish her findings in a document detailing the best practices for police departments.

After a Q-and-A with the media Lynch took several questions before she headed back to Washington D.C.
