Indy With Kids: Earth Day family fun
Some kids have a great sense of responsibility when it comes to keeping the earth safe and clean, even if they don’t have any ability to keep their own rooms clean. When it comes to learning about and caring for the environment, Indy With Kids’ Katy Mann says her children get excited, so she’s found several ways for them to get involved during Earth Month and beyond!
Here are a few ideas:
Indiana DNR offers several free fishing days throughout the spring and summer and the Family Learn to Fish day on Apr. 16, is a favorite for families that want to give fishing a try. Bait and tackle are provided as well as instruction and learning opportunities. Family Learn to Fish Day takes place locally at Eagle Creek Park and Fort Harrison State Park, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.. Pre-registration is required for the limited spaces available. To register for Eagle Creek, email: dfwed@dnr.in.gov. To register at Fort Harrison, email: jcummings@dnr.IN.gov Both events are free with park admission.
Many local families love collecting their drinking water from Flowing Well Park (5100 E. 116th St., Carmel). While you’re there, explore the wetlands and splash in the nearby creek. Carmel Parks and Recreation has a sign posted that recommends water from the well should be boiled before it is consumed. There are also great signs around that explain where the water comes from so you can discuss water with your children.
Plant some trees at home in celebration of Earth Day, free tree seedlings are available for pick up while supplies last on Apr. 23, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., at Asa Bales Park (205 W. Hoover St., Westfield) and on Apr. 29, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., IPL will distribute 1,000 trees on Monument Circle (1 Monument Cir.) You can also help Keep Indianapolis Beautiful in planting and caring for trees locally. KIB educates participants on why specific types of trees were selected for each area; whether it’s improving wildlife habitat or water quality, children will learn that different plants play different roles in our communities.
