With Tax Day nearing, woman warns of fraudulent calls about the IRS

 TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A Tippecanoe County woman is warning other residents after she received a fraudulent call telling her that she was being sued by the IRS. This comes as the deadline to file taxes quickly approaches.

Karon Joseph said she got the call around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. They told her that she was going to be sued by the IRS. They wanted to help her freeze her assets so the IRS would not have access to things like her savings account. They gave her a phone number to call, but she never did.

Joseph wanted to share her story, so that others wouldn’t fall victim.

“I knew by the end of the call, that if my mother-in-law had received that call or my 20-year-old niece who isn’t experienced with the IRS, that they probably would have called back immediately and given them all the information they wanted,” said Joseph.

Joseph said she reported the call to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office. They told her there wasn’t much they could do because most of the time, these calls originate from outside the country.

The IRS is also warning of similar calls and e-mails as Monday’s tax deadline approaches. The people behind the calls and emails will demand money or threaten to get the police involved for not making payments.
