Blood drive honors Deputy Koontz

KOKOMO, Ind. (WLFI) – A special blood drive honored Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz and Sgt. Jordan Buckley.

The American Red Cross hosted the drive in Kokomo Saturday.

The event was in memory of Koontz, who was killed while serving a warrant in Russiaville last month, and in honor of Buckley who was injured during the same incident.

Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Gibson said Koontz was a servant of his community and would be humbled by today’s event.

“He always had a heart of gold,” Gibson explained. “So for him to give back in his name, in his honor, he’d be blown away. So this is awesome for him.”

Gibson said the drive was more than a way to give back, it was a way to say thank you to previous donors

He said blood donations helped save Buckley’s life.

“He realizes the big impact it is, and he received blood at the hospital as well,” added Gibson. “He realizes now that everybody needs to give back. We’re all in this together, so he just wants to give back.”

The drive took place at First Church of the Nazarene in Kokomo.

More than 100 people showed up to honor the men and make a difference by donating blood.
