The Virginia Tech community reflects on the 2007 campus shooting

 RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Nine years ago, a shooter opened fire on the Virginia Tech campus killing 32 people.

Governor Terry McAuliffe has officially declared April 16, “Virginia Tech Remembrance Day.”

At 9:43 a.m. Saturday, a bell rang 32 times, once for each victim of the shooting.

It was followed by a moment of silence at the Capital Square Bell Tower where the victims were remembered.

Families impacted by the shooting came to honor the lives lost.

Andrew Goddard attended the event.  His son survived the shooting.

“Just to think about the 32 the people not as lucky as our family was, the ones who actually lost someone ..um and to pay my respects to their family, ” Goddard said.

State flags were at half staff thought the commonwealth today in honor of the victims, their families and the entire Virginia Tech Community.
