Experts say Botox helps migraines

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The American Academy of Neurology is updating their guidelines.

The group said Botox is safe and effective treatment for chronic migraines and three other neurological disorders.

Experts said Botox helps reduce muscle contraction and the transmission of pain signals that come with migraines. They said the treatment is safe for chronic migraine, spasticity in adults, cervical dystonia and blepharospasm.

The toxin has been long used cosmetically, to smooth out wrinkles.

The last time the guideline was updated was in 2008.

The updated guideline was published online April 18 in the journal Neurology.
