State Senate committee meets to discuss immigration issues

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana’s next step in regulating immigration began Tuesday.

The state Senate select committee on immigration held the first of an expected six meetings.

Chaired by Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel, the committee will hear testimony and then make recommendations about how Indiana should handle immigration issues.

Delph is a longtime advocate of strict immigration laws in the state. He asked two leading advocates of strict immigration laws to testify Tuesday.

One of them, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, is also an advisory to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

He said Indiana should make its voter ID law more strict.

The next meeting of the select committee is scheduled for May 25.
