A history of Carb Day at Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Carburetion Day was known for many years as the day cars qualified for the starting field on the Indy 500.

Drivers were given the opportunity to practice to help them make adjustments to their carburetors. Even after the introduction of fuel injection, in the late 1940s the original term carburetion runs continued to be used.

The lotus cars of Jim Clark and Dan Gurney were the last to actually use carburetors in 1963.

Carb Day as we now know it, is the day for the final practice for the Indy 500 field, pit stop competition and of course, a massive concert for race fans.
