IMPD: Keep guns away from kids

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are stressing the importance of gun safety after a two-year-old shot himself in the chest and died Wednesday night.

The boy found his mother’s handgun in her purse at a home near 56th Street and Kessler Boulevard, according to IMPD. Police said the grieving mother is cooperating with police.

IMPD officials are asking people to lock up their guns and keep them away from kids, lock up the ammo in a separate spot and store the keys where no kids can get them.

Employees at Tim’s Shooting Academy in Westfield demonstrated how to apply cable locks to guns Thursday. The locks are designed to prevent a tragedy if the gun ends up in the wrong hands.

“If you were to pull this trigger, it doesn’t even move,” assistant manager Adrian Tritask said. “Every gun owner has a responsibility to store their gun safely.”

Tim’s Shooting Academy offers multiple safety courses from gun cleaning safety to shooting fundamentals. Tritask said, if possible, they’d like to prevent another tragedy.

The company sells five different gun safes, ranging from $40 to $300, including one that uses the owner’s fingerprint instead of a key.

“There’s plenty that can give you quick access when you can actually store your firearm loaded, but keep it inaccessible to unauthorized persons,” Tritask said.

According to IMPD, people do not need a permit to keep a loaded gun in their home.
