Fort Wayne crash kills driver of car after collision with SUV

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A driver was killed Thursday evening after Fort Wayne police said he pulled in front of an oncoming Jeep.

According to 24-Hour News 8 sister station, WANE, police were called around 5:30 p.m. to the intersection of Ludwig and West Huguenard roads on a report of a vehicle crash with injuries. Officers found a passenger car and a SUV had collided.

Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Officer Jason Anthony said when officers arrived the driver of the vehicle and the driver of the SUV were both conscious.

The driver of the passenger car, though, had to be pulled from the vehicle, and he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Anthony said he was later pronounced dead.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The Jeep’s driver suffered chest pain but was not hospitalized, Anthony said.

According to a preliminary analysis of the crash, Anthony said the Jeep had been northbound on Huguenard Road when the passenger car, which had been westbound on Ludwig, tried to turn southbound onto Huguenard without yielding to the Jeep.

After the vehicles collided, the passenger car was sent off the left side of Huguenard and into a utility box and utility pole.

Officers were at the intersection for several hours collecting evidence, Anthony said. Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, he added.

The crash is under investigation.
