Dog shot, killed by neighbor remembered as ‘best friend’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A southside neighborhood is uneasy after a homeowner shot and killed their neighbor’s dog.

“He was a sweet fella, sweet as can be,” said Tiffiny Allen. Her 160-pound, 3-year-old American pit bull, Hank, was killed.

“In three minutes I lost my best friend,” Allen said.

Allen says she let Hank out shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday. She says she put him on a chain and then went back inside.

“I heard two shots. I immediately looked at him. He froze, he stood frozen. I ran to him,” she explained.

Blood now trails through her Franklin Township home. Allen says it all started with an argument Saturday with her neighbor.

“It was just him being mad at me for yesterday when I told him to mind his business and get in the house and find something else to do,” said Allen.

No one answered the door Sunday afternoon at the neighbor’s house. But in a police report the neighbor says he shot the dog after it got loose and attacked his dogs.

Some neighbors say Hank was known to get loose, but say he was a kind dog.

“It’s very sad. Very sad,” said Britney Sexton, a friend of Allen’s.

“[He was a] friendly dog. He never hurt me at all, I could just pet him and hug on him and everything,” said Tonya Qualls, who lives nearby.

“I loved Hank to death. He was like my own. I would come over here and play with him more than they would,” said Brianna Sullivan, another friend of Allen’s.

But other neighbors had a different encounter with Hank.

“The dog attacked my son. Bit my son and then attacked my Yorkie,” said Paul Treadwell, who lives on the same street as Allen.

“I was sitting on the couch. I was petting it and then it jumped up in my face and bit me,” said Kavaun Treadwell, who says it happened last summer.

Allen disputes that claim, but she says losing Hank is like losing one of her own.

“Never in a million years would anyone want to lose a child, and that’s what he was to me,” said Allen.

A spokesman with the Indianapolis Department of Code Enforcement says Allen was issued two citations for Hank. DCE says one of those incidents was earlier in April.
