One person airlifted after vehicle collides with train

RENSSELAER, Ind. (WLFI) – One person was airlifted after their vehicle collided with a train in Rensselaer Sunday night.

According to police happened just before 9 p.m. at the North Jefferson Street Crossing.

Police said a vehicle with one male driver was driving north bound on North Jefferson Street, when the Hoosier State line passenger train was approaching from the west.

The train struck the vehicle in the driver’s side door as it was slowing for a stop in Rensselaer.

The driver of the vehicle was taken by helicopter to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oaklawn, Ill.

No one on the train reported any injuries, but police said the drivers family has yet to be notified.

The crash is still under investigation, and tracks were re-opened around 10:30 p.m.
