Police search for suspect in first Speedway murder of year

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — One man is dead in Speedway’s first homicide of 2016.

The victim was found shot to death outside his apartment at Brickyard Flats Apartments late Saturday night.

Dameon Keller lit candles to remember his friend and neighbor.

“He’s going to be missed,” Keller said, “He was a loving father, very good friend.”

Saturday night Speedway police report multiple gunshots rang out in the apartment complex.

“Shortly after 12:30 a.m., our department received several 911 calls indicating that a person had been shot,” Speedway Police Sgt. Jim Thiele said.

Keller heard the gunshots and found his 24-year-old friend shot and bleeding on the sidewalk by his building.

“Then his girlfriend came out here and we were both here when he passed away,” Keller said, “That’s what’s the hardest on me is actually we had to sit there and watch him die.”

Keller has no idea why this would have happened.

He said that his friend was a good person with a big heart.

“He helped me out a lot when I didn’t have money,” he said, “He was kind-hearted.”

Other neighbors echoed that sentiment.

They’re all shaken up.

Murders don’t happen often in Speedway; usually only about one a year.

“It’s always very stressful for anybody that lives in a community, especially one this small, to have someone murdered,” Thiele said.

Police have interviewed witnesses and are working to find a suspect.

“We take it very seriously and will do everything we can to apprehend whoever killed this man,” Thiele said.

“He’s a good man and hopefully they find who did it,” Keller said, “He didn’t deserve that.”
