1974 Indy 500 race started Sunday tradition

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – In 1974, in his 11th attempt at a win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Johnny Rutherford took the checkered flag.

It was the same year the Indy 500 was on a Sunday. It was a first in the history that the race was scheduled for the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, that ended the never on a Sunday policy.

Rutherford went on to win two more Indy 500 races. In total he won 27 IndyCar races before he retired in 1994.
