Two toddlers struck by vehicles in separate incidents

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Two toddlers were hit by cars in separate incidents Monday evening in Lafayette.

The first happened just after 6:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Union Street.

Investigators said a 2-year-old boy ran out into the street and was struck by a car. The child was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis.

Police said the driver was cooperating. While toxicology results are pending, drugs or alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash.

Union Street was closed for nearly two hours while a reconstructionist was on scene.

The other incident happened about 15 minutes later on Runyon Drive. Police said a 3-year-old was either playing in or around a vehicle. The vehicle was put into gear and the child was hit. The child was also taken to Indianapolis.

Officers said the warmer weather means more people will be out and about, so it’s important to have your guard up.

“It’s a good reminder, with an unfortunate situation, for all the motorists to watch for children, watch for bicyclists, watch for pets. And also for parents, to really talk to your children about traffic safety and especially, if they’re young, keep an eye on them,” said Ofc. Scott Swick.
