Canadian couple convicted in child’s meningitis death

CANADA (WISH) – A couple in Canada may face time in prison for letting their 19-month-old die of meningitis.

David Stephan, 32, and Collet Stephan, 36, could face up to five years in prison.

A jury said the two failed to provided the necessities of life.

The couple said they thought their son had the flu back in 2012. They said they treated him for two-and-a-half weeks. They said they treated him with hot peppers, garlic, onions, horseradish and a product from a naturopathic doctor.

The two said they called 911 when they realized their son stopped breathing.

Doctors diagnosed him with bacterial meningitis and neurological dysfunction.

The couple’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 13.CNN contributed to this report.
