Principal charged with failure to report

FORTVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A middle school principal faces charges for failure to report after 17 days lapsed between when he became aware of a rumor involving an employee and when it was reported to authorities.

Mt. Vernon Middle School Principal Scott Shipley has been charged for failing to make a report in the case involving Kisha Nuckols, a non-certified teacher’s aide, lifeguard and substitute teacher. Nuckols faces several felony charges for child seduction and dissemination of matter harmful to minors.

According to court documents, Shipley was made aware of the rumors regarding Nuckols on March 12. Police said a counselor called him while he was on his way to Florida for spring break for two weeks.

On March 29, Shipley contacted Derek Shelton, an assistant principal at Mt. Vernon High School. It was Shelton that called police after confirming the rumor with the brother of a victim.

In an April 4 interview with investigators, Shipley said he believed the info he originally received was third or fourth hand information and not credible.

Shipley faces a class B misdemeanor for failure to make report. He has an initial hearing on May 18.
