Video: Webcam catches bald eagles feeding cat to young

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (KXAN) – A Tuesday feeding frenzy caught on an Audobon Society webcam is causing quite the stir on the internet.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, a pair of 6-week-old bald eagle hatchlings were waiting with their mom when dad arrived with a fresh meal. Unfortunately for everyone watching at the time, the meal was a cat.

Cue internet meltdown.

According to the Western Pennsylvania Audobon Society, after reviewing the footage, they believe the cat was already deceased but reiterate the birds’ circle of life is much more grotesque than most are used to.

“While many may cringe at this, the eagles bring squirrels, rabbits, fish (and other animals) into the nest to eat multiple times each day,” they said in a statement. “To people, the cat represents a pet but to the eagles and to other raptors, the cat is a way to sustain the eaglets and help them to grow.”

The Society is hoping that people will use this as a learning and teaching experience.
