6 people saved from burning home in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Firefighters helped six people escape a fire that broke out at a home on Fort Wayne’s southeast side early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the call at 5:45 a.m. in the 2800 block of Weisser Park Avenue. 911 callers told dispatchers people were on the second story outside a window.

When firefighters arrived, they found two people on the porch roof at the front of the home and two on the porch roof in the back of the home,  according to Fort Wayne Fire Department Battalion Chief, Brian Meeks. Meeks said crews pulled the people off the roof then searched the inside of the home.

During the search, firefighters found two other people in a first floor bedroom with the door closed. They were taken out of the home to be treated by paramedics. Three cats were also rescued from the home.

Three adults, two teens and a child who were inside the home at the time of the fire were in good condition, but the child was taken to a hospital as a precaution, fire officials said. No firefighters were hurt.

The home suffered moderate water, fire and smoke damage. Fire investigators said the fire sparked in the kitchen, but they aren’t sure what started it.
