Animal shelter in need of donations after 21 cats rescued

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) It may sound and even look cute as kitten season is underway, but the warmer weather is already creating problems for area shelters.

Heather Hayes, a staff member at the Sullivan County Human Society, said the shelter usually triples in the amount of cats and kittens they have this time of the year. She said it’s a really busy time for them.

Just days ago the cat room at the shelter was empty, but now almost every cage is filled.

“So we have reached max-capacity,” said Hayes.

Hayes said every cage is now almost filled because dozens of cats were rescued from inside a Sullivan County home. Police said they received calls from concerned neighbors Wednesday afternoon.

Animal advocates said the hoarding case is a prime example of good intentions gone wrong.

“They took on some cats and it got out of hand, and its very unfortunate, but we will be re-homing all of the cats,” said Hayes.

She said the case is unusual because the cats appear to be healthy and friendly.

The shelter also took in an additional fifteen cats on Thursday afternoon, creating an unexpected financial burden.

“You can start with just one cat, and she could get pregnant and it just creates an endless amount of animals. I mean it doesn’t stop, so please just spay and neuter,” said Hayes.

The Human Society said until the cats can be adopted the shelter is in desperate need of help from the community, hoping to give the animals a second chance at a loving home.

“We do reach out to the public and ask for any kind of donations, especially in this type of situation, we would be very grateful,” said Hayes.
