Bernie Sanders heats up campaign one day before primary
]INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Bernie Sanders will travel all over Indiana Monday to get one last push for votes ahead of the Indiana primary.
Sanders will hold a rally in Evansville Monday morning.
From there he will go to Fort Wayne to hold another rally in the afternoon.
Sanders made one last campaign stop in Indiana Monday.
According to his campaign, the crowd reached nearly 8,000 at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis.
He spoke in favor of unions and against trade agreements that he believes are the cause of companies like Carrier moving jobs to Mexico.
He said he’s running for president because “a great nation is judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable.”
He got a big cheer when he talked about raising social security benefits.
He said his campaign is listening to the young population, the Native American community, and the African-American community.
WISH-TV spoke with the senator before his speech about his strategy to win in the Hoosier state.
“We’ve put a lot of energy into grassroots activism. As we speak we have many, many volunteers who are knocking on doors or making phone calls,” Sanders said, “We believe that if there’s a large voter turnout, if working people come out to vote in large numbers, if young people come out to vote, we’re going to win tomorrow.”
Before the speech, a Native American dance troupe performed because they said Sanders is the only candidate they feel is speaking to their issues.
Sanders said it made him proud because he wants to improve relations between the government and the Native American community.
As of Monday morning, Sanders was trailing Clinton in the polls by only four points, which is within the poll’s margin of error.
Indiana’s primary is Tuesday, May 3.
