Man shoots at officer, arrested for attempted murder

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) – One man was arrested for attempted murder after firing several shots at a police officer Sunday morning in Kokomo.

According to the Kokomo Police Department, officers responded to a call of a man breaking into a residence in the 2800 block of East Baxter Road in Kokomo just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

After arriving on the scene, a man was found lying in a wooded area near the house.

An officer then told the man to show his hands.  Police said it was at that time the subject pulled out a handgun and started firing shots, from close range, at the officer.

The officer was not hit as he returned gunfire, also never striking the suspect.

Officers then secured the area and people living near the scene were evacuated from their homes.

SWAT and the Kokomo Police Department Crisis Negotiators were then called to the scene.

The situation ended after nearly four hours when the suspect, 51-year-old Paul Calloway, surrendered to police.

Calloway faces preliminary charges of attempted murder and resisting law enforcement.

Police also discovered Calloway had a warrant out for his arrest for residential entry and battery.

Calloway was transported to the Howard County Jail.
