SHIPROCK, N.M. (KRQE) – What started as a massive search for a fifth-grader snatched near her home has turned into a massive search for a killer. The body of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike was found just miles from the Shiprock Monument less than 24 hours after she was kidnapped off the street.
The FBI just released a detailed description of that suspect. He’s described as a light-skinned Native American in his 20s or 30s. They say he has short dark hair and a tear drop tattoo under his left eye. He wore earrings in both ears. He also was wearing a long silver chain and a gold watch.
The FBI, State Police, U.S. Marshals and countless other law enforcement officers say they will stop at nothing to find this guy.
But it’s been such an emotional day for people here in the community and all the search groups that were out looking for Ashlynne Tuesday morning.
Investigators say Ashlynne and her 9-year-old brother were taken from the side of a road in Fruitland just outside Shiprock around 4:00 Monday. They say a maroon van pulled up as they were playing outside near their home and asked if they wanted a ride.
The family says the kidnapper offered to take the kids to a movie.
Ashlynne’s little brother was found by the highway near the Arizona State line around 7:00 Monday night. But investigators aren’t saying if the kidnapper let him go or if he escaped.
According to the family, he boy says he last saw his sister near the Shiprock Monument. Her body was found before noon about six miles southwest of the monument – more than 20 miles from where she was abducted. It’s a tragedy that’s left this community is shock.
WISH-TV’s sister station KRQE has spoken to a woman on Facebook claiming to be Ashylnne’s mom. She lives out of state and says her kids live with their father in the Shiprock area.
Investigators have not said how the girl was killed or if she was sexually assaulted.
There will be a candle light vigil for Ashlynne Tuesday evening at the San Juan Chapter House in Fruitland.
Investigators have not said if the two children knew the suspect or if this was purely random. They also believe the suspect was by himself.
