Why a multi-million dollar Carmel mansion is on Airbnb

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – If you’ve ever wanted to spend the night in a mansion, now might be your time.

Tucked away behind a sea of green, sits a Carmel estate. The nearly 80-year-old home has played host to weddings, political events and reality TV shows.

Now for the first time, Elysian Fields can be your next escape.

Owner Scott Jones gave 24-Hour News 8 a tour of the grounds. Jones, who helped invent the voicemail, and search engine Cha-Cha, bought the place 20 years ago.

But it’s no longer his primary home. With 26,000 square feet going unused, he turned to Airbnb.

“I do think that we show off pretty well here and I was happy to experiment,” Jones said.

Five rooms are available, including the master bedroom. While it can run you a few hundred dollars, the smallest room starts at $95.

“It’s not outrageous,” Jones said. “I’ve seen some homes, even on Airbnb, for Super Bowl weekend, or race weekend, can be in the thousands, many thousands,”

While it might not cost much to spend the night, it’s not cheap to rent the entire space, with all the fun stuff. To have access to everything sets you back $5,000.

Jones won’t let just anyone spend the night. He says everyone is vetted.

Although it’s going well, if you want a chance to escape reality, don’t wait too long.

“I don’t have intentions to stop, but I experiment with things, and sometimes I move on,” Jones said.
