Engledow Group gives us a lesson in Hardscaping 101 from the beginning

It’s spring. You’re staring at your backyard, thinking, “Hmmm… what can I do to make my outdoor space more inviting and entertaining?” Donny Duke, Director of Design, Engledow Estates, has the answers! He chats with Amber about what you need to know before considering a large scale hardscaping project!

Here are some of Donny’s tips:* What are the 3 most crucial elements to a successful project?

– The best projects start with a great design. (cut to 3D “walk-through” video of project) Your chosen designer should be able to provide a detailed design and ideas of the concept they propose, don’t settle for a quick sketch that is not easy to fully understand what the finished product is intended to be.* Design should include all elements and be accompanied by sample pictures and product samples when possible

– While designs on paper reigned for a long time, modern technology now allows contractors to give clients a 3D “walk-through” of what their finished product will look like. Engledow utilizes this type of technology when working on large scale projects

– This type of technology allows us to give our clients an accurate picture of what the finished project will look like. Also allows us to provide alternatives, such as different types of pavers and different pattern options.* Using a qualified contractor that you trust and uses best industry practices

– Before choosing a contractor, ask to see their credentials. A good contractor will be actively involved with industry associations and have certified installers on staff. This will help to ensure that their work meets the best practices put forth the by the industry, and insure quality work on your project.

– Engledow is a Unilock Authorized Contractor and have many employees who hold certifications from the Interlocking Concrete Paving Institute and National Concrete and Masonry Association.

* Select quality materials for your project

– Most of the cost associated with a project of this size comes from labor. While material costs are part of the job cost as well, selecting a nicer material that you really like is worth the small amount of extra cost to make the job look like you really wanted; don’t settle for ordinary, get what you want.

  • What is your best advice for someone interested in undertaking this type of project.

    1. Start early

      • The best companies will always be in demand and have a backlog, don’t expect your design or project to start immediately.
    2. Think about what you want
      • Have an idea that allows the designer to customize it to your space, then step back and allow them the freedom to “make it work” with the space provided

    3. You get what you pay for

      • Many outdoor project involve the creation of an “outdoor room” effect. This involves similar guidelines for planning, construction schedules, and costs when you think about adding a room with the same sorts of features to your home. Make sure to budget accordingly, both monetarily and time.
