1 taken to hospital after shots fired in downtown Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Police confirm one person was shot in downtown Lafayette Monday afternoon.

Lafayette police were called to the area of North and 10th streets around 2 p.m. after reports of shots were fired. This is the same location police responded to over the weekend for another shots fired call.

Lafayette Police Lt. Brian Gossard told 24-Hour News 8’s sister station, WLFI, one man was shot in the leg. He was taken to an area hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Detectives interviewed several witnesses and determined an altercation of some kind preceded the gunfire.

People who live in that area said it is upsetting to see crime in the neighborhood.

“I don’t think there are such things as bad neighborhoods, there are bad people,” Lafayette resident Ryan Shelley said. “And unfortunately when you get an influx of a bad group of people or people who don’t want to follow the law, this is what you’re left with.”

Shelley, along with other neighbors said it’s important to remain vigilant.

“It’s a changing neighborhood, the demographics are changing, and just be vigilant and aware of things going on around you,” Shelley said.

Gossard said this incident was not a random event. There was also a vehicle damaged in the incident.

This report is the second shots fired report that Lafayette police have investigated recently. The first incident was Saturday, less than a mile away from Monday’s incident. Shell casings were found in the 1100 block of North Ninth Street, near Hartford Street.

Police continue to investigate both incidents.

Anybody with information regarding Monday’s incident is asked to call the Lafayette Police Department at 765-807-1200 or use the WeTip Hotline at 800-78-CRIME.
