Mother witnesses son’s murder during car ride on I-70

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Brenda Knight tried to save her son.

She wishes she could have done more, but now, she is trying to plan a funeral.

“You don’t know how sorry I am,” she said through tears, from her east Columbus home. “I wish I could bring my son back, but I can’t.”

Mario Edwards, 33, was shot and killed on I-70 west of Indianapolis.

On Sunday evening, Knight, Edwards and two other relatives left Columbus for Missouri.

According to Knight, they were traveling to pick up Edwards’ five children, who are with their mother.

“He [Edwards] was good with his kids,” Knight said. “Going to get his kids was all he talked about.”

Several hours into the trip, however, Knight said Edwards and Markus Yeanay began arguing.

Gunshots rang in the van and Edwards was shot.

Knight tried to administer CPR.

“His eyes was closed the whole time and I was trying to wake him up,” Knight explained. “I started blowing in his mouth and he came back.”

Despite Knight’s efforts, it wasn’t enough.

The family located a hospital where Edwards was pronounced dead.

“That’s my only son,” said Knight. “That’s my baby and he’s gone.”

Yeanay, 18, has been arrested and charged with murder. Stefan Woods, 21, was also arrested. He remains jailed and charged with possession of cocaine.

Both Woods and Yeanay are Edwards’ nephews.

Knight has returned to Columbus, where she is hoping to bring her son’s body for burial.
