Protecting Luck top priority for new offensive line coach Philbin

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – “Great offensive line coaches make their money in practice.”

That’s Indianapolis Colts new offensive line coach Joe Philbin’s philosophy. Coming off a stint as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, his new job will now focus on protecting the franchise; quarterback Andrew Luck.

“When you’re able to come in and work with people you respect and care about, and have a great passion for what they’re doing just like you do, it makes it fun,” said Philbin.

“Having another guy in the building like Joe, who has all the experience he has, as far as evaluating and coaching those guys, (you) can’t put a price tag on it,” said head coach Chuck Pagano.

The Colts have dealt with a lot of changes this offseason with their playing and coaching personnel, but the veterans on the team say they like the approach of their new position coaches.

“Quick, fast paced. He wants us to get a lot of reps in. It’s a lot of reps on the field so we can watch it in film. It’s great,” said left tackle Anthony Castonzo regarding Philbin. “You absolutely have to respect that he’s got a lot of knowledge coming in, he’s worked with a lot of guys that have been really successful.”

“I feel like that’s strength of mine. Having an ability to not only relate to players, but staff members, members of an organization or school,” said Philbin. “Football is a great team game. And I like to think of myself as a great team player.”

Philbin will have his hands full trying to protect Luck, who was sacked 15 times in seven games last season. The plan to protect number 12 will continue to take shape in the upcoming months.
