Man charged for making meth that forced home evacuation

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette man whose residence had to be evacuated after he tried to make meth was brought up on formal charges.

Alton Hines, 29, is charged with having an illegal drug lab, attempting to deal methamphetamine and possessing heroin.

On May 6, police got a tip that meth was being made in a home in the 2000 block of Perrine Street. The responding officer said the chemical odor in the house was so strong he ordered it to be evacuated.

Hines’ mother, who also lives at the home, told officers she regularly watched her young grandchildren at the home, but they were not there at the time.

Investigators said they found ingredients to make methamphetamine and a drug lab inside the home. The Lafayette Fire Department and the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Unit were called in to handle the materials safely.

In total, Hines faces four felony charges.
