Semi driver arrested after hitting buggy, leaving area

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – The driver of a tractor-trailer was arrested after hitting a horse and buggy and leaving the area, according to a statement from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators said the buggy was sideswiped around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 20 near County Road 1000 West.

According to the victims in the buggy, they told police they were hit by a tan-colored semi that left the area. They told police the truck had a flat tire on the front-passenger side of the vehicle. Police followed marks on the pavement they believed were left by the semi.

They eventually located the truck on Sheridan Drive in Topeka, approximately 12 miles from the crash scene.

The driver, Michael Braun of Wisconsin, told police he left the crash because he thought he killed someone, according to a police report.

Police said no one in the buggy was hurt.

Braun was arrested and taken to the LaGrange County Jail on an initial charge of leaving the scene of a property damage accident.
