The Power of Penske

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One of the most iconic names in racing will celebrate 50 years in the business in a Chevy Camaro.

Roger Penske will drive the pace car for the 100th running of the Indy 500.

“It was amazing to get asked. And then I started wondering ‘how can we use this to our advantage. That was my next thought,” said Penske. “I wonder if I can use this as an advantage. Do I tap the breaks?”

Roger Penske’s crew has become the team to beat here during the month of May, and rightfully so. A member of Team Penske has won 3 of the last 4 races so far this IndyCar season.

“I think you’ve seen the success we’ve had to date. Our team this year has been on top. But lots of competition, and I think this is going to be one of the greatest races. And I think for me, you know, to personally be able to pace the field, someone’s going to have to wait another 100 years to do it again, so I think I have a pretty unique situation,” said Penske.

The pace car itself is also unique to 500, in that it’s not unique at all.

“It’s typical that the cars that have been pacing this race have been set up special, so this has been…the car, maybe other than the color, is what you can buy in the showroom. Which is amazing when you think about that,” said Penske.

It’s also amazing to think that a Penske driver has won the 500 16 times, more than any other team in IndyCar. Roger Penske and his crew will continue their quest for dominance throughout the month of May.
