Baby shot in eye with BB gun

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 1-year-old girl is recovering after police said she was shot with a BB gun on the west side of Indianapolis.

It happened at an apartment in the 3300 block of Tara Lane Monday around 5:45 p.m.

The girl’s aunt said she received a hysterical phone call from her daughter. Her daughter told her that a boy living in the neighborhood had shot the baby with a BB gun when they answered the front door.

Some kids living in the apartment complex heard a baby girl crying Monday evening. Family identified her as 1-year-old Azaelea Higgins.

“She couldn’t open her eye; it was swollen. We tried to open it to give it some relief,” the girl’s aunt, Brittanya Sullvian, said. “I saw that her eye was very red and my sister called the ambulance.”

Sullivan said she was right around the corner heading home when it happened. Her daughter was home at the time.

“I asked, ‘How did he do that?’ She said, ‘They were banging on the door playing at the door,’” Sullivan explained. “She opened the door and that’s when he proceeded to pull out the BB gun and he was trying to shoot my son for whatever reason I don’t know why, but instead of shooting my son he shot my niece in the eye.”

Sullivan described her niece as a bubbly and happy little girl. She was taken to the hospital to be looked at. She’s expected to make a full recovery. Sullivan said her sister had a talk with the boy’s mother.

While Azaelea is recovering, Sullivan is hoping this incident will serve as a valuable reminder to all parents and children when it comes to safety and guns.

Sullivan told 24-Hour News 8 her sister called the police and filed a report. She said her sister is planning to press charges.

At this time, no one has been arrested in connection to this case.
