Teacher struck by vehicle dies

OSSIAN, Ind. (WANE) – The former Norwell and current Fort Wayne Community Schools teacher who was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle Sunday morning has died.

Scott Hanni, 38, died just after 4 p.m. Sunday at Lutheran Hospital, the Allen County Coroner’s Office confirmed to WISH-TV’s sister station WANE.

According to the Wells County Sheriff’s Office, Hanni was riding a bicycle northbound on County Road 100 East around 9:30 a.m. when they said Hanni road into the intersection of County Road 1100 North and was struck by a Chevy Cruise driven by 20-year-old Jacob Burns, who was traveling westbound. Deputies said Burns was unable to avoid the collision with Hanni. Hanni was thrown from his bicylce due to the collision. They also noted that there is a brick school-house on the corner of the intersection that could have obstructed Burns’ view of Hanni. Deputies said there is not a stop sign on County Road 1100 North for traffic heading east or west.

He was taken from the scene in critical condition, and a Wells County dispatcher said Hanni remained in that state into the early evening.

Hanni taught at Norwell High School before moving to Miami Middle School to serve as a media specialist.

Fort Wayne Community Schools spokeswoman Krista Stockman said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hanni family.”

The crash is still under investigation.
