Lifeguards free surfer trapped in sand

SAN DIEGO, Ca. (WISH) – A surfer who was trapped in the sand is now free after a half dozen lifeguards saved him on Sunday.

A group of surfing tourists buried their buddy Louie Lopez in the sand. They made a tunnel connecting one hole to another hole.

The group buried Lopez so only his head was sticking out. He is 6 foot, 4 inches.

The tide slowly caused the water to filer in, locking Lopez into place and trapping him in the trench. Six lifeguards shoveled him out of the sand, eventually allowing him to pull himself out of the hole.

No one was injured.

The group said they plan to stay away from holes from now on.CNN contributed to this report.
