Expanded recall on sunflower seeds at Carmel Market District

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – Giant Eagle supplier SunOpta is expanding its recall on its sunflower seeds sold in the bulk section of the Carmel Market District.

The additional recalled product is being recalled due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The affected sunflower seeds were available for purchase from May 6 and May 19 in pre-packaged containers with sell by dates of November 6, 2016 through November 15, 2016.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly, or others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms that include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiffness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea

Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Those who have purchased the affected product should dispose or return it to the Carmel Market District.
