Remembering 3 boys 28 years after deadly fire

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) – A father is remembering his sons, nearly three decades after they died in a Fort Wayne house fire.

Early in the morning of May 21, 1988, a fire started in a home in the 2900 block of Central Drive.

It would take the lives of three little boys: 3-year old Durrel, 6-year old Gemayel and 11-year old Jermaine. It would also change the life of their father Larry Mitchell, who will return to the site on Saturday, May 21.

The family will celebrate the life of the three boys, much like in the past.

During the memorial in 2000, Mitchell talked to 24-Hour News 8’s sister station,WANE, about the importance of the relationship between parents and children.

“Parents, stand up for your kids,” Mitchell said. “Because when they are gone, they are gone for good.”

Firefighters on the scene said it appeared someone threw Molotov cocktails into the home.

Nothing has been built on the site since the fire.

Today, the case remains unresolved with nobody charged in what Mitchell believes to be homicide.
