Ironman athlete dies during race

CHATTANOOGA, TN. (WISH) – An athlete died during the Ironman Chattanooga 70.3 in Tennessee Sunday, after suffering a medical emergency during the swim portion of the event.

According to CNN, crews pulled the athlete from the water sometime during the 2.4 mile swim.

The person was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Ironman released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our athletes participating in today’s (Sunday) Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga Triathlon. The athlete required medical attention during the swim and was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated. Our condolences go out the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support.”
