Sagamore of Wabash given to school principal struck by bus

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indianapolis school principal who was struck and killed by a school bus while pushing students to safety has been posthumously awarded one of Indiana’s highest civilian honors.

Gov. Mike Pence presented the Sagamore of the Wabash award Monday to the late Susan Jordan of Amy Beverland Elementary School. She died Jan. 26 after a bus jumped a curb and struck the 69-year-old principal. Witnesses say they saw Jordan push children to safety.

A news release says Jordan’s daughters, Lisa Jankowski and Amy Dinwiddie, and Jordan’s brother, Bob Kelley, accepted the award in a private ceremony in the Governor’s Office.

Pence says Jordan earned the award not only for her heroic actions but also for “a lifetime dedicated to education and to students.”
