‘Glamping’ becomes popular at the IMS

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Lot 1C, formally known as the Coke Lot, is famous for race fans having a fun time camping before the Indy 500. But another spot inside the track is gaining a reputation as the new place to be.

For the third year in a row, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway offered glamping, which stands for glamorous camping.

About 90 tents are set up in the infield.

For a starting price of $1,000, the tents comes complete with beds, chairs and a table.

Outside the tent, there are private bathrooms and showers.

People are playing bags, grilling out, lighting camp fires and jamming to music.

Some people have Glamped all three years, others are rookies. But everyone here says this has become the ideal way to spend the weekend at the track.

“It’s really the best way to do it. Since they started we wanted to try it out and since then we can’t do it any other way,” said Seth Berger of Indianapolis. “The best thing is that we get here and we stay here. We don’t go anywhere. And that’s my favorite part, is that we watch everybody drive out and drive in and everyday we just kick back and relax. It’s great.”

First timer Mary Pat of Indianapolis hadn’t glamped before but was looking forward to the new experience. “My idea of camping is staying at the Holiday Inn. So this is a little roughing it. It’s roughing it for me. I don’t have my king size bed and all my down pillows, this is totally roughing it for me,” she joked.

Besides just staying at the campsite all weekend, the Glampers have full access to Carb day, Legends day, and the Indy 500.
