Potential Greenwood abduction merely a ‘Good Samaritan’

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – A scary situation early this week turned into a sigh of relief for the Greenwood community.

Tuesday morning, a woman told Greenwood police that a man tried to abduct her 4-year-old son.

A woman told police she was preparing her six kids for school when her 4-year-old son ran across the yard. Her 9-year-old daughter followed the boy and both returned saying a man had tried to coax the 4-year-old into a pickup truck, according to Greenwood police.

The man reportedly grabbed the boy’s hand and started to walk him back to the truck while promising candy. The girl grabbed her brother’s arm and both ran back home.

Police caught up with the man in the van Thursday morning.

Police pulled him over for a tail light violation and asked him if he had seen any children by the road this week.

According to police, the driver, without prompting, told the officer that he had seen a little boy standing too close to the road earlier in the week.

He explained that he stopped out of concern for the boy and asked him to come back to his truck with him so that they could find his parent. He said that the boy’s sister came up to him and said “Hey mister, that’s my brother.” She then took him back to the apartment.

The driver said he then felt the boy wasn’t in danger and continued on to where he worked.

“We now believe that this was a case of a Good Samaritan simply looking out for the welfare of a young child,” Greenwood Police say.

The man said he doesn’t watch the news and didn’t know about the coverage of the incident.
